Alaskan summers are very short. Greenhouses can extend the growing season considerably by providing a warmer environment during the spring and fall. Because many of the crops we wished to grow needed a longer growing season than was available we built a small greenhouse to extend our growing season from 90 days to 120 days.
We built this small greenhouse (it is 8 foot by 10 foot) in the early 1990's. We used it for several seasons, experimenting with hydroponics, mixed crops and similar trials. The experience we gained from it will help us determine spacing for such hot-house crops as peppers, squash and tomotoes.
Although we are not currently using this greenhouse for plants, it is very useful as a shed to store seeds, tools, etc. This keeps us from having to carry our tools to the garden site.
