Lake Minchumina, Alaska

Lake Minchumina is a large lake located in the geographic center of Alaska. It is 70 miles north of Mt. Mckinley; 200 miles north of Anchorage and 150 miles SW of Fairbanks. The population varies with season between 20 and 35. There are no roads to Minchumina; the primary way people get there is to fly. The airport there is about 5,000 feet long, so it can handle fairly large aircraft (though jets are ill-advised because it is a gravel runway). Riverboat, foot, dogsled, and snowmachine are all other ways to get there--though it can take days or weeks.
